New Production! A firm favourite of opera lovers around the world, Poulenc’s masterful opera of courage, cruelty and redemption returns to Opera di Roma with a new production by award-winning film and stage director Emma Dante.

Inspired by real events, the story centres around Blanche de la Force (star American soprano Corinne Winters), a timid young noblewoman who – having joined a convent of Carmélite nuns to escape the terrors of the French Revolution–must choose a side when the order is sentenced to death for not renouncing their faith.

On the podium, Opera di Roma Music Director Michele Mariotti brings out the tonal nuances and power of an exhilarating score that culminates in one of the most impactful final scenes in the repertoire.

Opera di Roma

Taking its current name at the advent of the republic, Rome’s beautiful opera house, Teatro dell’Opera di Roma was first inaugurated in 1880, as Teatro Costanzi. The company hosted the world premiere of Mascagni’s Cavalleria Rusticana and Puccini’s Tosca among others.
