  • Enthralling. Kosky’s serious underlying intent doesn’t preclude jolting wit. There isn’t a weak voice among the cast. And Pappano conducts a magnificent orchestral performance that perfectly balances the baleful and brassy with the delicate and detailed.
    Richard Morrison, THE TIMES
Compelling. There’s no weak link in a uniformly strong cast, and in the pit Pappano has the measure of Wagner’s grandeur and intimacy.
    Andrew Clements, THE GUARDIAN
Wagner’s epic drama of greed and fate flies by. Kosky and Pappano have produced a vivid, compelling show.
    Richard Fairman, FINANCIAL TIMES
NYT Critic's Pick! Eerie, vivid and intense, accessible and stimulating for Wagner newcomers and connoisseurs alike.
Zachary Woolfe, THE NEW YORK TIMES
    Magnificently gripping.
    William Hartston, EXPRESS

Opera in four scenes (1869)

New Production! Celebrated Australian director Barrie Kosky joins forces with conductor Antonio Pappano in a bold new imagining of the first chapter of Wagner's Ring cycle, a work which boasts some of the greatest music ever written for the opera stage.

When a precious hoard of gold is stolen from the river Rhine, it unleashes a chain of destructive events, pitting gods and mortals against one another for generations.

Join us for a spectacular journey into the world of myth, dream and memory, with the figure of Erda (Wiebke Lehmkuhl) – Mother Earth herself – at its centre. The outstanding cast includes Christopher Maltman as Wotan, Marina Prudenskaya as Fricka and Christopher Purves as Alberich.

This is a momentous occasion you don't want to miss.

ROH Guidance: Suitable for ages 12+. This production contains scenes of nudity and depictions of blood and violence.
