  • Fascinating and provocative. Sondra Radvanovsky commanded the stage with magnetic dramatic charisma.
    Lorenzo Fiorito, BACHTRACK
Unreserved acclaim for everyone, with Radvanovsky and Martone triumphant. The Teatro di San Carlo is back.
    Dario Ascoli, CORRIERE DEL MEZZOGIORNO
An elegant, profound, coherent and, above all, engaging production, built around the great American soprano: her stage presence, her sculpted dramatic temperament and her powerful voice.
    Luigi Raso, L'APE MUSICALE
An extraordinary evening. Sondra Radvanovsky can certainly claim Medea as her vocal signature: declamation, colour, ease... she paints a monstrous portrait of the scorned and murderous woman from her entrance on stage to her final, anthological phrase.

Opéra-comique in three acts (1797)

New Production! Passion, revenge and human frailty. Join us for (what is remarkably) the first-ever performance of Cherubini’s masterpiece at Naples’ San Carlo Theatre — the world’s oldest continuously active opera house — featuring celebrated soprano  Sondra Radvanovsky in her acclaimed portrayal of the tour‑de‑force title role, which she has performed at the Metropolitan Opera and the Lyric Opera of Chicago.

The opera recounts the tragic tale of Medea, a mythic sorceress betrayed by her husband Jason (Francesco Demuro), when he chooses to abandon her to marry Glauce (rapidly rising Italian soprano Désirée Giove), the princess of Corinth. Overcome with grief and fury, Medea will stop at nothing in her quest for vengeance…

Also in the cast is Anita Rachvelishvili as Medea's confidante, Néris, Giorgi Manoshvili as her father Creon, and Maria Knihnytska and Anastasiia Sagaidak as the handmaidens.

Staged by multi award-winning film and theatre director Mario Martone, with Riccardo Frizza on the podium.

Teatro di San Carlo

Next to Plebiscito Square, one of the symbols of Naples, stands the shrine to Italian opera, Teatro di San Carlo, the oldest continuously active venue for opera in the world, having opened in 1737, decades before either Milan's La Scala or Venice's La Fenice.
