  • A great success. Highly engaging and profoundly moving. Filidei's music is deeply rooted within the operatic tradition, listeners can discern echoes of Messiaen, Berg and, more explicitly, Puccini.
    Laura Servidei, BACHTRACK
Extraordinary. Filidei’s score is astonishingly inventive, ingenious, and as anticipated, profoundly semiotic. Ingo Metzmacher conducts with precision, rigour, and sensitivity, highlighting every timbre and dynamic nuance.
    Bernardo Gaitan, OPERAWIRE
This is a work that deserves to be seen, heard, and discussed. It feels very much a product, as well as a part, of the great Italian operatic tradition.
    OPERA TRAVELLER
Visionary. A heart-stopper marked by fidelity to the text and uncompromising high quality. Filidei deserves to be on the bill of all the great theatres.
    Pierluigi Panza, CORRIERE DELLA SERA

Opera in two acts (2025)

New Production! Palace Opera & Ballet is delighted to open the 2025-26 Cinema Season with Damiano Michieletto’s world premiere staging of the gripping new opera from Francesco Filidei, a co-commission between La Scala and Opéra de Paris.

Based on Umberto Eco’s award-winning medieval thriller, the story follows a 14th Century Franciscan friar William of Baskerville (Grammy Award-winning baritone Lucas Meachem) and his apprentice Adso (star mezzo-soprano Kate Lindsey) as they investigate a series of mysterious deaths among the monks at a remote monastery, uncovering a labyrinthine library and a web of secrets.

Immersive and texturally rich, Filedei’s composition is built on a symphonic base, layered with a series of arias and recitatives that transform traditional Gregorian chants. Leading the La Scala Orchestra and a chorus of more than 150 singers is Ingo Metzmacher.

Sydney & Melbourne patrons please note: As a one-off for this production only, Wednesday’s screenings at Palace Moore Park (NSW) and Palace Cinema Como (VIC) will commence at 12pm. [updated 15/8/25]
