  • Dazzles in its heartbreak and sheer spectacle. In Wright's Giselle, dance is a danger and delight: but as he proves, it’s ultimately the thing that sustains you.
    David Jays, THE STANDARD
Breathtaking. Wright's take on the quintessential Romantic ballet remains a gem.
    Siobhan Murphy, THE STAGE
As near perfection as you can get. Wright's focus on characterisations that make sense and are relatable makes every role a joy to dance for the cast and entirely engaging for the audience.
    Amanda Jennings, BACHTRACK
Wright’s staging remains fresh, its dances' vibrant, its storytelling limpid.
    Teresa Guerreiro, LONDON TIMES
Wright’s Giselle premiered in 1985 and will feel as timeless and perennial in another forty-one years as it does now.
    Lily Hyde, GRAMILIANO

Ballet in two acts (1841)

The world turns upside down for the peasant girl Giselle (Akane Takada) when she discovers her lover Albrecht (Matthew Ball) is actually a nobleman promised to another. In despair, she kills herself. Her spirit joins the Wilis: the vengeful ghosts of women hell-bent on killing any man who crosses their path in a dance to the death. Wracked with guilt, Albrecht visits Giselle’s grave, where he must face the Wilis – and Giselle’s ghost.

Peter Wright’s atmospheric and bewitching 1985 production of this quintessential Romantic ballet is a classic of The Royal Ballet repertory. Set to Adolphe Adam’s evocative score and with atmospheric designs by John MacfarlaneGiselle conjures up the earthly and otherworldly realms in a tale of love, betrayal and redemption.
